In October 2014 Hilton Worldwide announced its 12th hotel brand, Canopy by Hilton. It is an opportunity for Hilton Worldwide “to not only enter the lifestyle space by developing a new brand, but also to redefine this category by creating a more accessible lifestyle brand. […] Canopy is the energizing new hotel in the neighborhood offering simple, guest-directed service, thoughtful local choices and comfortable spaces, so guests simply feel better going forward.”
As of August 2019, there are thirteen canopy by Hilton, with Reykjavik (Iceland) being the first that opened in 2016. In Asia, LDPi designed the first canopy by Hilton Chengdu City Center with a view over the Tianfu Square and by the end of 2019, the canopy by Hilton Hangzhou with a view over the Jinsha Lake.
The color temperature for guest rooms is 2700K while for the public area it is 3000K, including for the wall-wash of the “flashed brick” feature wall found in many parts of the hotel, inspired by the local Chengdu's Jing Xiangzi 1.5 km away from the hotel.
