The Ningbo Eastern New Town (ENT) is located in the Yinzhou district of Ningbo. ENT is an Eastwards urban extension and transformation of Ningbo with a structure called “One Heart and Two Cores” where the old core of the city coexists with the new eastern core being the administrative, cultural, commercial and economical center of the same city.
The lighting design scope of work include the plots CA-1\6\7, the administrative area and part of the Eco-Corridor. While local mainstream urban lighting designs usually include massive usage of colorful and dynamic LED lights, LDPi convinced the customer to use a different approach by keeping a simple and more quiet lighting design while taking into consideration the human aspect of residential areas and let the lights exist for the city without showing off. In order to achieve in a high quality and harmonious lighting environment, the lighting design took into consideration several elements at the early stage of the project, including but not limited to, the feasibility of renovating existing facades’ lighting, planification of the illuminances, color temperatures, scenes, light pollution control of key areas and landmark buildings linkage.
The renovation of the Ningbo National People’s Congress upper facade lighting embedded weatherproof LED rope lights into custom slots embedded into the curtain wall, forming regular horizontal stripes that emphasize the volume of the building.
The lighting design of the Ningbo City Exhibition Hall brought nuances and simplicity by following the shape of the facade. Projectors are placed at several key inflection points of the facade creating waves of light and shadow matching the rhythm of the building itself.
South across from the Houtang River, both Wuyi Square East and West towers use identical design with 2700K-to-6500K adjustable LED wall wash linked with one another to further reveal the rhythm of the unique three-dimensional view of the terrace feature of both buildings.
The landscape path towards the Wuyi Square West tower relies on low level bollards placed at an even interval to not only guide visitors in and out of the building with simplicity, but also to reveal the texture of the grass carpet.
Trestle bridges use small size lighting fixtures to remain discrete as well as strip lights at the edge beneath the bridge being reflected over the surface of the water.
The lighting design managed to fulfill the government need for a comfortable lighting environment for the people of the city that could, with simplicity, brave the elements and withstand the test of time.
