2022 THE DUET OF LIGHT forum - Zhengzhou station
2022-09-09

On August 18th, 2022, Lily Li, partner and general manager of LDPi (China branch), was invited to the “2022 THE DUET OF LIGHT” forum in Zhengzhou. The new version of this forum with the dual theme of "operation + design", brought together industry experts, scholars and outstanding corporate representatives to discuss the development and transformation of the lighting design industry.

Questioning herself with "When to use what kind of fault tolerance" and "how to make the idea come true", Lily shared intuitive application cases and discussed the topic of "Emotional lighting and the design of the flexible space".

On stage, Lily took three cases with errors and problems as examples, respectively expounding "only believe that there will be mistakes in experience, and the actual effect and concept may be very different", "only talking about the temperature and not talking about the illuminance is unreasonable." and "good design can't just look at the moment, it must be sustainable".

From the case analysis, she launched a discussion on "Fault Tolerance at Design Stages" and proposed the idea of high fault tolerance in ideas and low fault tolerance in practice, that is, "it should be possible to think about possible errors in the conceptual stage and make the design that can accommodate more mistakes; in the design development stage, try not to give the opportunity for mistakes to happen.”

When discussing the issue of "how to determine whether an idea can be implemented", Lily also shared her own work experience. She said that in addition to technical mock-ups, small-scale mock-ups are also an important means to test whether an idea can be implemented.

Lily showcased the PAGEONE Wudaokou store in Beijing as an example, and described  the experimental process in which designers, starting from the design concept of  "Welcoming readers' lively heart in a quiet atmosphere", are committed to eliminating the unnoticed light spots in the space and creating a comfortable and quiet reading environment for the readers.

Bookshelves lighting is a key element of every bookstore, but the outcome of the effect is not always satisfactory as the following pre-investigation shows common problems.

(Left picture) The book cover reflects the light to form indirect glare; The light spot on the end of the luminaire is obvious. (Right picture) The interlayer arrangement causes shadows.

Several rounds of mock-ups involving the shelves’ manufacturer and the lighting manufacturer were necessary to select the optimal lighting effects.
