June 13th, 2017, on a hot summer day, volunteers of the BEST Fund went to Madao Primary School, Liuba County, Shaanxi Province to select students for the 9th BEST Fund Summer Camp. This is the ninth time that volunteers had driven over the winding mountain roads to introduce advanced teaching concepts to help children of the mountains to achieve their great dreams.
Every June, the BEST Fund staff will come to poor mountainous areas, and select outstanding students from grades 3 to 6 and send them to Shanghai Giraffe English Training Center for a one month summer camp. This will help them see beyond the mountains at an early age, broaden their horizons, increase their knowledge, increase their self-confidence, set their aspirations and become responsible people.
In the blink of an eye, the first batch of outstanding students selected by BEST Fund in 2009 has attended college. Pang Renyuan, principal of Madao Primary School, Liuba County, Shaanxi Province, said, “Every outstanding student who was selected by BEST Fund Shanghai in the past is an example to inspire classmates to study hard.”
During the activities part of the teaching program of this year, more than ten teachers from Shanghai Giraffe English Training Center came to Madao Primary School, Liuba County, Shaanxi Province to observe, teach and select the best students. In classrooms, every serious look, every shape of their mouth when answering questions, every wrinkled and stretched brow and every little hand raised, all of that show children's desire for this opportunity.
After fair, just and open selection, the list of eight outstanding students was announced: Fu Mengjiao, Hua Lei, Sun Hui, Wu Sixuan, Wu Yueyang, Zhang Ting, Zhang Zhihao and Zhao Yushu. In August, they will head to Shanghai to start a wonderful English learning summer camp.
At Shanghai Giraffe English Training Center, teachers will use lively and humorous situational teaching to help children improve their English in all aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing. At the same time, two teachers from Liuba will also observe the teaching process and bring back advanced teaching concepts and methods to help more children.

Tewa Srilaklang (chairwoman of the Beijing Liang Dian Design Center), Tang Zhi (chairman of Shanghai Giraffe English Training Center), and Dominique Phommahaxay, general manager of LDPi Lighting Design Partnership International (China Branch) teamed up with primary schools in Liuba County, Shaanxi Province to annually select outstanding students in financially challenged rural area and send them to the Giraffe English Training Center in Xuhui District, Shanghai for a unique 1-month summer camp. This self-organized public welfare education project has also received great attention and support from the Liuba County Education and Sports Bureau.
